Veglin is a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antisense oligonucleotide which binds VEGF A/C/D mRNA by Watson Crick base pairing, leading to mRNA degradation. Veglin therefore inhibits signaling through all three VEGF receptors, giving it a unique mechanism of action among VEGF antagonists. Veglin was discovered at the Norris Cancer Center of the University of Southern California by VasGene’s founding scientist, Parkash Gill, M.D. Blocking this pathway leads to new therapeutics for the treatment of a variety of cancers, which utilize the VEGF receptors for growth and allow new blood vessels to grow beyond a few millimeters in size.
